Our campaign for equal parenting
Welcome to the heart of our movement. Learn about our campaign for equal parenting rights and how we're working to create a fairer system for children and parents alike. We know through decades of research that children thrive when both parents are actively involved in their lives, and we're committed to making that a reality through appealing to the government. Join us in making a difference.

Why equal parenting matters
At Both Parents, we champion the idea that children benefit most from having both parents actively involved in their upbringing. Studies have consistently shown that children thrive in equal parenting scenarios, exhibiting better emotional well-being, academic performance, and overall life satisfaction. Conversely, disproportionate parenting setups can lead to increased stress and difficulties for children. We believe that a rebuttable presumption of equal parenting time is crucial for fostering healthy development and strong family bonds.

Our approach: Appealing to government
Our campaign is centered on the belief that we, as a community of parents and concerned citizens, have the power to effect meaningful change by appealing directly to the government. We aim to raise awareness among policymakers about the importance of equal parenting rights and the positive impact it can have on families across the UK. Through petitions, lobbying, and public advocacy, we are working tirelessly to ensure that the voices of children and parents are heard.
Petition Wording
We're frequently asked about the specific wording of our petition and what specific wording we'd like to see in law.
The petition itself is worded as follows;
"We want the Government to legislate to establish a presumption of equal parenting time following separation, unless there is clear evidence that it would not be in the child’s best interests. We think this would help ensure children maintain meaningful relationships with both parents.
Current family law does not presume equal contact when parents separate. This can result in one parent having significantly less contact, despite research showing that children benefit most when both parents remain involved. One analysis of 40 studies found children in equal parenting arrangements consistently have better mental health, stronger relationships with parents and improved academic performance. We think that even in high-conflict situations, shared parenting leads to better outcomes."
Legal Wording
We haven't specified a legal wording in our petition, however the recent change in law in Kentucky USA says;
“Subject to KRS 403.315, there shall be a presumption, rebuttable by a preponderance of evidence, that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child.
If a deviation from equal parenting time is warranted, the court shall construct a parenting time schedule which maximizes the time each parent or de facto custodian has with the child and is consistent with ensuring the child’s welfare.”
Seems fair, right?
